I just saw The Golden Compass on impulse. The movie wasn’t as heretical as some wish it were. I think the most powerful atheist symbol in the movie, though, is the souls. In the story, people carry their souls externally, represented by animals. When they die, their souls merely evaporate and disappear. Nothing more, nothing less.
